Winter Storm 2025
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area, in effect from 5:00 PM Tuesday, January 21,2025 to 12:00 PM Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Winter Storm Preparedness
Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates closely via trusted sources like the National Weather Service or your local news.
Stock Up: Make sure you have enough food, water, and essential medications on hand to last for several days, just in case. Don't forget pet food and any special needs items. Find preparedness information at weather.gov/safety/winter
Winterize Your Home:
* Bring in outdoor furniture and anything that could be damaged by the storm.
* Protect your pipes from freezing.
* Ensure your heating system is in good working order.
* Have firewood ready if you have a fireplace.
Power Up: Charge all your devices and consider a backup power source like a portable charger or generator in case of outages.
Warming Stations
Bryan County will open warming stations through 12:00 PM on Thursday, January 23, 2025 in both North and South Bryan County.
These stations will provide residents with a safe and warm space to escape the cold. Please note that the setups will be minimalistic, with no cots, showers, or other amenities. The details are as follows:
South Bryan County Warming Station (Open to City of Richmond Hill Residents):
Timber Trail Gymnasium, 508 Timber Trail | through 12:00 PM on Thursday, January 23, 2025
Winter Driving Safety
As temperatures drop, one of the hidden dangers on the road is black ice – a thin layer of ice that can be almost invisible. It forms when water freezes on roads, often in shaded areas or bridges, making it hard to spot.
We encourage you to stay off the roads unless necessary.
If you do have to travel, here are some tips to stay safe when driving in winter conditions:
Slow Down – Reduce your speed in icy conditions to give yourself more time to react.
Increase Following Distance – Leave more space between you and other vehicles.
Don’t Use Cruise Control – Your full attention is needed to react to changing conditions.
Avoid Sudden Movements – Make smooth, gradual turns and braking to prevent skidding.
Stay Informed – Check weather and road conditions before you travel
