Storm Debris Collection Update - Thursday, September 19, 2024
Tomorrow, September 20, 2024 will be the LAST DAY for debris collection in areas impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.
Any remaining debris should be placed at the curb. This will be the last opportunity for collection.
City contractors began collecting debris on August 22, 2024. Between 8/22/24 and 9/10/2024, we collected approximately 7,538 cubic yards of debris.
If a resident still has storm debris after Friday, it will need to be disposed of through private means such as a designated landfill facility. Please note that storm debris should not be placed in Atlantic Waste carts.

Storm Debris Collection Update - Tuesday, August 27, 2024
We want to assure you that our crews are working tirelessly to clear the debris as quickly and safely as possible.
The process for ensuring all of the necessary data is collected and reported to the appropriate agencies is time consuming. This data is very important for potential FEMA reimbursement for our community.
All trucks must be inspected, ticketed and scanned prior to collecting debris. Each truck holds approximately 150 cubic yards of debris. Once a truck has reached load capacity, drivers must then travel approximately 20 minutes to the checkpoint for inspection and ticketing in Chatham County. Finally, trucks visit the transfer station for dumping. It then takes approximately another 20 minutes to return to Richmond Hill and continue collecting debris.
Here are a few updates on collection:
• Collection crews are working 7 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday (the transfer station is not open on Sunday.)
• Crews are still collecting in White Oak and Rushing Street Station.
• Thursday August 28th, 2024 - crews will begin collection in Richmond Place.
• Friday, August 29th, 2024 - crews will begin collection in Mulberry.
• Other impacted areas will follow.
• Refrigerators and freezers will be collected separately and will be collected last. These must be treated differently due to the refrigerant they contain.
Things you can do to prevent delays in collection:
• Please be mindful that the streets in many of these areas are very narrow. We advise taking another route and not trying to pass the truck. This could be dangerous to our workers and you.
• Please place ALL debris no more than 20 feet from the curb. Trucks can not reach beyond this point.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work through this together!

Storm Debris Collection - Wednesday, August 21, 2024
The City of Richmond Hill will be providing debris removal for those impacted by Hurricane Debby. This service will begin on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
This opportunity is ONLY for areas impacted by flooding waters.
Tomorrow (Thursday, August 22, 2024) crews will begin diligently removing debris in areas that were impacted by Hurricane Debby.
This process will take time and we ask for your patience as we begin cleaning up these areas of our city. Please remember the following when placing your items at the curb for collection:
- Only storm related debris is accepted. No other trash or debris that was not a result of the storm will be picked up.
- All debris must be sorted/separated into like piles. (See the Debris graphic below)
- NO HAZARDOUS WASTE WILL BE COLLECTED. Examples are paint cans, pesticides, chemicals of any kind, motor oil, batteries, etc.
- No storm debris in trash bags/trash cans will be collected. Empty/place storm debris directly on right-of-way for removal. If you have already placed storm debris in trash bags/trash cans, we ask that you remove the debris and empty it directly on the right-of-way.
- Debris contractors will NOT go onto private property to retrieve any storm debris.
- If you have hired/paid a contractor to remove storm debris (trees, branches, fencing, etc.) from your property, it is that private contractor's responsibility to haul away.
- Once the first pass phase is completed, the debris contractors will then schedule their second pass through to pick-up any and all subsequent related storm debris. This too will take time to complete, and we again ask for your patience.
The route will be as follows:
Rushing St
White Oak
Live Oak
Richmond Place
Mulberry
Rosemont St
Carter St
Camellia St
Kennah Ct
1st Street
2nd Street
Buford Cook Dr
Forest St
Clark St
It will take some time for all areas to be collected. We appreciate your patience during this time! Please continue to monitor our website and social media channels for updates to the collection timeline.
We also ask that residents move any vehicles off of the roads where possible.
Once the contractors have completed the first pass phase, they will then schedule their second pass through to pick-up any and all subsequent related storm debris. This too will take time to complete, and we again ask for your patience.
**All items collected during debris removal pick-up are subject to the discretion of the City of Richmond Hill and their agents.**
